Kennesaw Mountain’s peak elevation is 1,808 ft. and its name was derived from the original Cherokee Indian name for the mountain, “Gah-nee-sah”, which means burial ground. It is ironic that Kennesaw Mountain’s most famous event is the Civil War Battle of Kennesaw Mountain in which approximately 5,350 soldiers were killed. The Battle of Kennesaw Mountain was fought from June 19th of 1864 until July 2nd between the Union Army commanded by Major General William T. Sherman and the Army of Tennessee commanded by General Joseph E. Johnston. Sherman’s 100,000 man army had a total of 254 guns while Johnston’s army had 63,000 men and only 187 guns. By today’s standards, both armies were profoundly underequipped yet despite repeated attempts to overrun the Confederate defenses, the Union army failed to dislodge the firmly entrenched Confederate soldiers from their positions.
The site where the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain occurred is part of the 2,900 acre Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park, which is managed by the U.S. National Park Service. In addition to the Civil War battle site, the Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park contains 17.3 miles of hiking trails. After parking at the Visitor Center, a 1.4 mile hiking trail leads to the summit where visitors can easily see the City of Atlanta’s tallest buildings on a clear day.
