Young Harris

The City of Young Harris in Towns County developed after Young Harris College was established in 1894. As more and more people built homes around the college, a community grew into a town that was also named Young Harris. According to the U.S. Census in 2000, Young Harris had a population of 604 and a total land area of 1 square mile. The median income for a household in the city was $38,250 and the median income for a family was $46,071.

Young Harris is located in what is often referred to as the Enchanted Valley, a verdant and forested region surrounded by tall mountains. At the center of the valley is the turquoise blue Lake Chatuge where a wide variety of recreational opportunities are available. Facilities at the lake rent pontoon boats, waterskiing boats, jet skis, canoes, kayaks and peddle boats. The numerous streams and rivers around Lake Chatuge are famous for fly fishing and the many miles of hiking trails are renowned for their natural beauty.

One of the finest resorts in the North Georgia Mountains is located in Young Harris and it is one of the big reasons why tourists come to Young Harris. Young Harris is considered to be one of the most desirable places to live in North Georgia. Towns County has an excellent public school system, the cost of living index is low at 79.0, the crime rate is low and quality health care is conveniently available at nearby hospitals. At the center of town in Young Harris, most of the homes are much older than the homes around Lake Chatuge and few of them are available for sale because they are occupied by long term residents.
